Reading Worksheets for First Graders (Free Printables)
Reading is exciting in first grade, as kids really start building their skills. Each day brings an opportunity to find more words they can sound out or recognize and books they can read all on their own!
Reinforce these important skills with our extensive collection of printable first grade reading worksheets. They’re designed to give young learners meaningful and engaging first grade reading practice.
What reading skills do first graders learn?
By first grade, letter-sound correspondence is often automatic, and children begin to focus on learning more about ways to combine letters to form more complex words. First grade reading practice typically covers the following elements:
- Consonant blends like tr, st, ng, and so on. In these blends, both letters make their own sound, but they’re said quickly in one smooth sound.
- Digraphs like th, sh, and ph. In a digraph, two letters work together to make a completely new sound. Since kids can’t sound out a digraph, learn to recognize them and the sounds they make.
- Long vowels and silent -e words. First graders know that vowels make more than one sound. Now they learn that a silent -e at the end of a word changes the sound the vowel makes.
- Sight words, also known as high-frequency words. These are words that appear most often in the books children are reading. Learning how to pronounce them and working to recognize them can enhance reading fluency.
