What reading skills do second graders learn?
In second grade, students are being more comfortable sounding out simple words that follow typical spelling patterns, which means they’re ready for more nuanced skills that help them deal with trickier spellings and pronunciations. Second grade reading practice includes:
- Consonant blends. Consonant blends are letters that join together to make a unique sound. However, when saying consonant blends, you can still hear the sound of each letter. Second graders are typically ready to tackle three-letter consonant blends. For example, str- is a three-letter consonant blend in the word stride, and spl- is a three-letter consonant blend in the word splat.
- Prefixes and suffixes. These common beginnings and endings (such as pre- and -ment) can help kids determine the meaning of unknown words.
- Compound words. Longer words can often be broken into two smaller words, as in football or seashell. Learning to break these down makes reading them easier.
- Sight words and vocabulary words. Sight words are also known as high-frequency words because they’re the words that appear most often in text. Getting familiar with these words and other vocabulary words can help grow children’s literacy skills.
- Extended vowel practice. While second graders are already familiar with vowels, they’re ready to take a deeper dive into the way vowels impact the spelling and pronunciation of various words.
