Study: ABCmouse Enhances School Readiness Transitioning from Head Start to Kindergarten
In our recent study conducted in collaboration with Albina Head Start, we examined the efficacy of integrating ABCmouse Early Learning Academy into their curriculum as a means to bolster school readiness among young learners transitioning from Head Start to kindergarten. The study, available in full PDF format here, delves into the impact of digital learning tools like ABCmouse in facilitating a seamless transition for children entering formal schooling.
Our findings reveal a significant correlation between ABCmouse usage and improved kindergarten preparation. By supplementing traditional classroom instruction with ABCmouse activities, teachers across 25 classrooms positively influenced nearly 500 students. Notably, for every additional 100 ABCmouse learning activities completed by a student, there was a 3.6% increase in school readiness scores. This effect was particularly pronounced in classrooms where ABCmouse was utilized more extensively, indicating the substantial role digital tools can play in enhancing early learning outcomes.
Furthermore, the study highlights ABCmouse’s pivotal role in fostering family engagement in children’s education. By assigning lessons for at-home completion, educators like Ms. Araya strengthened the connection between classroom learning and parental involvement. This approach not only supported academic growth but also promoted cooperative behavior and sustained engagement in learning activities.
Our partnership with Albina Head Start enabled us to extend ABCmouse access to waitlisted families, addressing the challenge of limited Head Start slots. The case of Kenya B. and her daughter Ja’Nyah exemplifies the transformative potential of this access, with Ja’Nyah demonstrating remarkable progress in literacy and math skills within a few months of using ABCmouse.
The study underscores the positive impact of high-quality digital educational tools like ABCmouse in early childhood education. By facilitating school readiness and enhancing family engagement, ABCmouse not only supports academic growth but also strengthens the home-school connection, laying a solid foundation for future learning achievements.
