Several of the letter J crafts and activities listed below require the outline of a letter J. You can draw one yourself or find one in our free printable collection of letter J worksheets.
1. J is for Jaguar
Create an awesome letter J jaguar in a jiffy with just paper, marker, a scissors, and glue.
Required Materials
- orange & white construction paper
- scissors
- glue
- black marker or paint
How To
Trace an uppercase letter J onto a piece of orange construction paper. Work with your child to cut it out, along with two small curved pieces for the jaguar’s ears, a small curved piece for the jaguar’s tail, four small rectangles for the jaguar’s legs, and a small circle for the jaguar’s face.
Next, cover the orange letter J with black spots. If using paint, allow it to dry completely before the next step. Help your child arrange all of the orange paper pieces into the shape of a jaguar, and then glue them into place. All that’s left to do is name your jaguar. Maybe Jeff, Jessica, Joe, or Joy?
2. J is for Jelly Bean Counting
Turn jelly beans into a delicious tool for practicing counting skills and exploring the letter J sound.
Required Materials
- multi-colored jelly beans
- plate or bowl
- paper
- marker
How To
Write down several numbers on a sheet of paper, working with a few numbers your child is familiar with and adding one or two challenge numbers. Leave space near each number for your child to add jelly beans.
Pour jelly beans into a bowl or onto a plate. Then ask your child to count out jelly beans to match each number they see on the paper. If your child is up for the added challenge, assign a specific color of jelly bean to each number so your child can practice color recognition, too.
3. Letter J Dot Painting
It takes just a few drops of paint to fill in letter Js with bright colors.
Required Materials
- printed letter J templated
- paint
- cotton swabs
- paint tray or paper plate
How To
Begin by printing out our letter J outline from our Letter J Worksheets. Next, have your child pick out one or several paint colors. Ask them to use cotton swabs to fill the letter J outlines with dots of paint. They can experiment with creating larger or smaller dots based on how hard they push down on the cotton swab.
Tip: Add in math practice by counting up the number of dots inside each letter J.
4. J is for Jellyfish
Construction paper and pipe cleaners create a jolly jellyfish that kids will love.
Required Materials
- construction paper
- pipe cleaners
- scissors
- hole punch
- marker
- googly eyes
How To
Cut out a semi circle from a piece of colored construction paper. Use a scissors to trim the straight edge of the semi circle into a scalloped edge. Use a hole punch or scissors to punch holes into each of the scallops. Have your child insert a pipe cleaner into each hole, twisting the end of the pipe cleaner behind the paper to hold it in place. Glue or draw on eyes and create a cute little smile for your jellyfish.
Tip: Add to the jellyfish fun with our free printable jellyfish coloring pages.
5. Letter J Paint Blowing
Encourage gentle, soft blowing with this craft so paint stays on the paper. Be sure to clear the area of any important items before starting.
Required Materials
- letter J outline
- thick paper or card stock
- paint
- water
- paint tray or paper plate
- straw
- paint brush
How To
Draw the outline of a letter J onto your paper or card stock. Add a small amount of paint to a paint tray or paper plate. Mix a few drops of water into each paint color to thin it out. Have your child drop a few dollops of paint into the letter J. Then, have them use the straw to gently blow on the watery paint, watching it move across the letter J with each breath. Repeat this process until the letter J is filled with color.

Kids will love the job of filling a letter J with multi-colored jewels!
Required Materials
- letter J outline
- plastic jewels
- glue
How To
Print out or draw the outline of an uppercase letter J. Pour some plastic jewels from the craft store into a bowl, and ask your child to fill the letter J with jewels, using glue to hold them in place.
Tip: You can also try filling the letter with small stickers that look like jewels.
7. J Matching Activity
Kids will jump at the chance to try this letter J matching game.
Required Materials
- white paper and colored sheets of paper
- marker
- scissors
How To
Draw a grid onto a white sheet of paper. Fill in each square on the grid with an uppercase or lowercase letter J. Then, cut out small squares of paper, using one color for uppercase Js and another color for lowercase Js. Ask your child to match the uppercase letter Js to those written on the grid. Do the same for the lowercase Js.
Tip: Make this activity more challenging by using the same colored paper for both the uppercase and lowercase letter Js, requiring your child to identify the letters based only on letter shape.
8. Letter J Salt Paint
The letter J takes on joyful color and an interesting texture with this painting technique.
Required Materials
- white card stock or thick white paper
- pencil
- table salt
- liquid school glue
- water color paint
- paint brush
How To
Use a pencil to lightly write uppercase and lowercase letter Js onto a piece of thick white paper or card stock. Then have your child use liquid school glue to carefully trace over the shape of each letter J. Place your piece of card stock onto an art tray, and shake salt over it until all of the glue is covered in salt. Let dry. Carefully shake off any excess salt.
Using watercolor paint, have your child touch their paintbrush to part of the salt letter J. They’ll see the colors flow through the salt and transform their letter Js from white to a blend of various colors.
9. J is for Jug of Juice
This simple drawing exercise lets kids practice using different types of lines to draw jugs filled with juice.
Required Materials
- paper
- crayons, markers, or colored pencils
How To
Show your child a picture of a jug and explain that they’re used to hold liquids, like juice. Then invite your child to practice drawing their own jug of juice, adding any special colors or details they’d like.
Tip: This drawing exercise also challenges children to experiment with creating curved and straight lines, which is a foundational activity to prepare for making the curved and straight lines used in letter writing.
10. Letter J Dough Carving
Just grab a pencil and some playdough, and you’re ready to try a whole new way of forming the letter J!
Required Materials
- paper plate
- playdough
- pencil
How To
Ask your child to flatten and smooth out playdough onto a plate or clean surface. Then show them the letter J, and ask them to use a pencil to write the letter J into the playdough. Have them try creating both an uppercase and lowercase letter J. Then try rolling up the playdough into a rope and forming it into the letter J.
