Table of Contents
Make learning the alphabet exciting by exploring hands-on activities centered around the letter O. Each activity is built around common craft supplies and a low time commitment, making it easier to work them into your day. While our letter O crafts and activities are designed for preschoolers, we suggest having an adult close by to assist.
Several of the letter O crafts and activities listed below require the outline of a letter O. You can draw one yourself or find one in our free printable collection of letter O worksheets.
1. O is for Owl
Dress up the letter O as a one-of-a-kind owl with a few snips of construction paper and glue!
Required Materials
- brown, white, and yellow construction paper
- scissors
- glue
- googly eyes
How To
Trace the letter O onto a piece of brown construction paper and cut it out. Next, cut out a semi-circle for the owl’s head and two long pointy ovals for its wings. Then, cut out a yellow triangle for the owl’s beak and two triangles with a wavy edge for the owl’s feet. Finally, cut out two white circles for the owl’s eyes.
Work with your child to assemble and glue down all the pieces of the owl, saving the googly eyes for the end. Look up an image of a real owl and see how yours compares.

2. O is for Octopus
Kids will love creating their very own original octopus!
Required Materials
- purple construction paper
- googly eyes
- scissors
- glue
- marker
- pencil
How To
Use a pencil to draw the shape of the octopus’s body, which is similar to an oval with the top chopped off. Then, cut out eight skinnier strips for the octopus’s arms. Give them a slight curl by gently running the edge of a scissors along the top of them, as if it were a piece of ribbon. We recommend adults do this step.
Glue down all the pieces, keeping the octopus’s arms loose and curled up off the paper at the ends. Add the googly eyes and a smile and any other finishing touches your child thinks up.
3. O is for Orange
How opportune that this letter O craft comes with a snack!
Required Materials
- letter O outline
- orange
- glue
How To
Draw or print out the outline of a letter O. Give your child an orange and help them peel it. If they’d like to eat the orange, they can! After finishing their snack, work with your child to arrange the orange peel pieces inside the outline of the letter O. Glue the pieces down if you’d like.
4. Stuck on O
Add oodles of color to the letter O with lots of vibrant stickers.
Required Materials
- paper
- marker
- circle stickers in various colors
How To
Create an outline of a letter O with small O-shapes. Give your child a few sheets of circular stickers and invite them to fill in each little O with a sticker.
Tip: As an added challenge, ask your child to create a pattern with the colored stickers as they attach them to the Os.
5. O is for Ostrich
Create the optimal ostrich with marker, paper, and a cute tuft of feathers!
Required Materials
- black construction paper
- scissors
- blank sheet of paper
- marker
- craft feathers
- googly eye
- glue
How To
Cut out an oval shape from the black construction paper and glue it onto the blank sheet of paper. Use a marker or a pencil to draw in the ostrich’s long neck and legs. Glue a googly eye on at the top of the neck, then draw a beak, creating the ostrich’s head. Finally, tuck a few feathers under its body and glue them down. Now you have a fine feathered ostrich!
Tip: Lean into the letter O theme even more by using a letter O shape for the ostrich’s body.
6. O is for Ocean
Using aluminum foil as a canvas lets kids create an outstanding ocean!
Required Materials
- aluminum foil
- cotton swab
- paint brush
- acrylic paint
How To
Tear off a sheet of aluminum foil and set it out for your child, along with a few acrylic paints and cotton swabs. Squirt a little of the paint directly onto the foil and have your child move the paint with a cotton swab or paintbrush, creating the ocean.
Since the foil doesn’t absorb the paint, it moves around differently, creating a water-like look that mimics the ocean. Add a few sea plants with cotton swabs and create fish by either painting them in or cutting them from paper!

7. Letter O Stamping
Cover a piece of paper in Os with help from an ordinary toilet paper roll!
Required Materials
- paper
- paint
- toilet paper roll
- paper plate
How To
Set your child up with a blank piece of paper, some paint, a paper plate, and a toilet paper roll. Then explain that the toilet paper roll is their art tool for filling the paper with as many letter Os as possible. When they’re done, count up all of the Os they created.
8. Find the O
Kids will happily oblige in finding the letter Os when the activity feels like a game!
Required Materials
- paper
- marker
- colored pencil or crayons
How To
Using a marker, create a simple grid of letters, including letter Os and other letters your child is familiar with. Give your child a crayon or colored pencil and ask them to color over all of the letter Os they see.
9. O is for Oatmeal
Give the letter O some outrageous texture in this sensory craft project.
Required Materials
- letter O outline
- dried oats
- liquid glue
- bowl or plate
How To
Draw or print out the outline of a letter O and fill a small bowl or plate with dried oatmeal. Apply liquid school glue to fill in the entire letter O (use a paint brush to help spread it out if needed). Then, have your child sprinkle the dried oatmeal over the glue, filling in the letter O completely and gently pressing the oats down as they work.
Tip: For added fun, your child can paint over the oats once the glue has dried.
10. Letter O Dough
Here’s an opportunity to form Os with just your hands!
Required Materials
- paper
- marker
- playdough
How To
Draw several letter Os onto a sheet of paper. Then, work with your child to roll out pieces of playdough into longer, thin strips. Ask your child to use the playdough strips to form the outline of each letter O on the paper. End the activity by asking your child to write their own letter O at the bottom of the paper for you to cover in playdough.
