1. S is for Snake
A slithering snake provides a fantastic way to explore the shape and sound of the letter S!
Required Materials
- green and red paper
- markers
- glue

How To
Draw or print out the outline of a letter S onto a piece of green paper (or whatever color paper you may have) and use a scissors to cut it out. Next, cut a long tongue shape from red construction paper with two points at the end. Then, use markers to add lines to the snake’s body. Finally, glue down the tongue and googly eyes.
2. S is for Sunflower
Create a sensational sunflower that acts as writing practice too!
Required Materials
- yellow, brown, white, and green paper
- marker
- scissors
- glue
How To
Cut out a circle from a brown piece of paper. Then, cut out oval-shaped semi-circles from the yellow paper to create the sunflowers petals. Finally, cut out a long stem and leaf from the green paper.
Have your child assemble and glue down the sunflower parts. Next, have them practice making the letter S shape in each sunflower petal, using a pencil, marker, or crayon. They may need to rotate the paper to write as they work their way around the sunflower.
Tip: Add in some math practice by counting up the number of petals on your sunflower.
3. S is for Spoon Painting
Who knew a spoon could act as a special tool for painting?!
Required Materials
- various colors of paint
- letter S outline
- plastic spoon
- paper plate
How To
Print out or draw the outline of a letter S onto a sheet of paper. Have your child select several colors of paint and add a bit of each one to a paper plate.
Set your child up with the letter S outline and paper plate with paints. Give them a spoon and explain that the spoon will help them paint their letter S. Your child can try dipping the back of the spoon into the paint and pressing it onto the S. They can also experiment with using the sides or front of the spoon to paint, seeing the variety of shapes they can create.
4. S is for Star Counting
Practice counting and making the letter S sound by sorting stars into the right number groups.
Required Materials

- paper stars or star stickers

How To
Here’s a simple letter S activity that also acts as sorting and counting practice. Begin by drawing a grid onto a sheet of paper. Write numbers onto the first row of the grid. Then, punch out a pile of stars from construction paper using a star-shaped hole punch. Have your child adhere the corresponding number of stars beneath each number.
Depending on your child’s skills, you can have them sort the stars by color and then ask them to match the number of stars to the number they see at the top of the page, using a certain color.
Tip: You can also use star-shaped stickers for this activity.
5. S is for Snowman
Build a snowman any day of the week with several circles and some glue!
Required Materials
- blue, white, and orange paper
- marker or crayon
- glue
- googly eyes
How To
For this craft, cut out three circles from white paper, making each circle slightly smaller than the previous one. Have your child glue the circles onto colored construction paper, building a snowman. Next, cut out a small orange triangle from paper and have them glue it down for the snowman’s nose. Then, ask them to draw twig arms and smile with a black marker and glue down googly eyes to finish their snowman!

6. S is for Strawberry
Turn the letter S into a sweet strawberry in just a few simple steps!
Required Materials
- red and green paper
- black crayon or colored pencil
- scissors
- glue
How To
Trace the letter S onto a piece of red paper and work with your child to cut it out. Then, cut out a green stem and green leaves (technically called the calyx) for the top of the strawberry. Glue the green leaves and stem to the top of the strawberry, then have your child draw black seeds all over the letter S using a black crayon or colored pencil.
7. S if for Square
Fill the letter S with a series of colorful squares. Count them up at the end for an added challenge!

Draw or print out an outline of the letter S onto a sheet of paper. Then, work with your child to cut out small square shapes from a variety of colored paper. Then, have your child glue down squares to fill the letter S. This craft creates a great opportunity to practice identifying colors and shapes. 8. S is for Salt Paint
Give the letter S some texture and a splash of color with a sprinkle of salt and a bit of paint in this fun craft!
Required Materials

- table salt
- liquid glue
- paint
- paint brush
- paper plate
How To
Print or draw the outline of a letter S onto a sheet of paper, using either just an uppercase letter S or an uppercase and lowercase letter S. Have your child fill the outline with liquid glue (it can be helpful to paint it on with an old paintbrush).
Then, sprinkle or gently pour salt all over the glue in the letter S and let it dry. After it dries, shake off the excess salt. Add some color to the salt-filled letter S by gently painting over the salt with water color or diluted acrylic paint.
Tip: Help keep the salt contained in this craft by placing the paper onto a rimmed baking sheet before sprinkling on the salt.
9. S is for Snowflake
In this simple craft, the letter S gets filled with several snowflakes!
Required Materials
- white and blue paper
- snowflake stickers or paper cutouts
- glue
How To
Draw or print out the outline of a letter S onto a piece of blue paper. Then, set your child up with a variety of snowflake stickers. Alternatively, you can glue down paper cutouts of snowflakes. Ask them to fill their letter S with snowflakes, practicing the S sound in the word snowflake as they work.
10. S is for Sun
Construct shining rays of sun in this short and sweet craft!
Required Materials
- yellow paper
- yellow craft sticks
- googly eyes
- black marker
- scissors
- liquid glue
How To
Use a scissors to cut a circle shape from yellow paper. Grab a handful of yellow craft sticks (or color plain craft sticks with yellow paint or marker) and break or cut them in half one at a time. Ensuring your child is careful with the rough edges of the craft sticks, assemble them around the edge of the yellow circle and glue everything down. Then create smiling face with googly eyes and a marker!
