Woven Heart Valentine’s Craft for Kids
This Woven Heart Valentine’s Day Craft provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to make personalized Valentine’s gifts or decorations. These classic woven hearts, believed to have originated in Denmark in the 19th century, were made popular by author Hans Christian Andersen and are traditionally used as Christmas ornaments in Scandinavia. Over time, they’ve become a popular craft for Valentine’s Day too, perfect for filling with small treats or notes.
What You’ll Need for Your Valentine’s Day Heart Craft:
- Felt Sheet or Paper: To create the hearts. Felt adds durability, while paper makes weaving easier.
- Scissors: For cutting the heart shapes and slits in the felt or paper.
- Pattern: A printable template to ensure the perfect size and shape (download the template here).
- Glue or Sticky Tape: To secure your heart if needed.
Instructions for Your Woven Heart Craft:
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Start by collecting your felt or paper, scissors, glue or tape, and the printable template. Using different colors like red, pink, and white can add to the Valentine’s theme!
Step 2: Use the Template to Cut Out Your Pieces
Print and cut out the heart template. Fold the template in half, place it on your felt or paper, and cut along the outer edges. You will need two pieces of the same size and shape to weave together, so repeat the process using a different color of felt or paper.
Step 3: Cut the Slits
Next, cut along the solid black lines of the template to create slits in each of your two heart pieces. These slits are what you’ll weave together to form the heart pattern.
Step 4: Begin Weaving Your Pieces
Take one of your cut-out heart pieces and begin weaving the strips of the other piece through the openings of the first piece. (Watching the video above is helpful here.) Alternate weaving the strips through each other, carefully threading the strips together to create a woven pattern.
Step 5: Finish Weaving and Secure
Once you’ve woven the pieces together, gently press them flat to ensure they’re secure. You can add a dab of glue or a small piece of sticky tape at the ends to keep the pieces in place if needed.
Step 6: Make Additional Hearts if You Want
Repeat the steps above to create additional woven hearts in different colors and sizes. These can be used as decorations, party favors, or even small treat holders.
The Woven Heart Valentine’s Craft is a fun way for kids to create lovely handmade gifts. Whether they’re filled with treats or used as decorations, these woven hearts are a beautiful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and spread a little love.
