Fun Learning Activities with Coins
⭐ Coin Sorting Game
Give children a pile of mixed coins and have them sort them by type (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters). This helps with coin recognition and categorization. Here’s where the real fun comes in–pick a pile of coins and tell your child they can have them if the try adding up the value of the coins in the pile.
⭐ Play Store
Set up a “store” where children can “buy” small items using real or play coins. Stock your store with items from around the house, and write small price tags to go with each item. Children can select the items they want, counting out the correct amount to “pay.” This activity gives children hands-on experience with counting and adding different coin values.
⭐ Make a Coin Caterpillar
Draw or print out a caterpillar’s body with circles featuring different coin values. Have children place the correct coin on each section to help the caterpillar “grow,” while practicing matching coins to their values.
