Fun Vowel Team Practice Worksheets
Individual vowels with the standard sounds a, e, i, o, and u often pair up as what is known as a vowel team to create one sound.
Since many words incorporate vowel teams, young learners must explore and identify this unique spelling pattern for correct reading and spelling.
What is a Vowel Team?
When two or more consecutive vowels make one long vowel sound, we refer to them as a vowel team. Some examples of the most common vowel teams in English:
- ai
- ay
- ee
- ea
- ie
- oa
- oe
- ue
- ui
Vowel teams can be tricky and are often behind many reading and spelling errors. Why are they so difficult? Let’s take the long o sound. Vowel teams oa, ow, o, o_e, ough, and ew all make up that one long o vowel sound. To help get your child started, we’ve gathered our favorite vowel team practice sheets for you and your child to enjoy.
