Tips for Teaching Letter V Words

  1. Grab a Mirror

    To make the letter V sound, children will need to place their top teeth against the inside of their lower lip. It can be helpful for children to watch this in the mirror. You may also need to remind them that they’re not just pushing air through their teeth when making the letter V sound–they need to also make a sound in their throats.
  1. Switch Between F and V

    The letter F sound and letter V sound require children to move their mouths in very similar ways. Help them learn the difference in making these two sounds by switching between the letter F sound and letter V sound, saying words like frog and then vroom.
  1. Use Multiple Teaching Approaches

    Introducing a new letter sound in a variety of ways can help children better understand and get familiar with it. Combine our list of letter V words with the letter V song, worksheets, and activities to approach this new letter sound in many different ways.
